Okotoks RCMP reports few collisions during heavy snowfall

TL;DR

Four local collisions were recorded in Okotoks over a week of heavy snow, a low count possibly linked to a new traffic enforcement role.

Despite a period of heavy snowfall, the Okotoks RCMP logged only four local traffic collisions between February 13 and February 20. The low number stood out to officers monitoring road safety during the storm.

The four incidents occurred within Okotoks, while the broader Foothills region reported an additional twelve collisions that week. Those regional figures do not include the incidents counted in Okotoks itself.

Staff Sergeant Mike Zinck attributed the unexpectedly low count, in part, to a Traffic Enforcement position created on February 6. The role was introduced to focus on collision prevention and to improve driver behavior across the community.

The Traffic Enforcement officer maintains a strong, visible presence on local roads, identifies problem areas, and takes proactive steps to reduce serious and preventable crashes. Duties include monitoring high‑traffic corridors, school zones, and busy intersections.

The position was developed after residents voiced concerns about speeding and unsafe driving, especially near schools and major routes. Zinck said the recent implementation of the role may have contributed to the reduced collision numbers during the snowfall.
